Movements

Grouped by the movement each painter is usually filed under — a convenient label, not a membership card.

Movement names are retrospective. Nobody in 1872 called themselves an Impressionist until a hostile critic did it for them, and Hokusai never heard the word ukiyo-e used the way we use it. The labels are useful for finding things and misleading if you take them as self-descriptions.
